La Tomatina is a festival that is held in the Spanish town of Buñol (Valencia province), on the last Wednesday of August each year. During this festival the participants engage in a battle using tomatoes.
This festival originated in 1944 during the celebration of the Giants and big heads, where she was born a wild brawl between young people in which they are used tomatoes as weapons. The police dispersed the protesters, but the following year the same scenario was repeated with the difference that the protesters brought tomatoes from their residences. Local authorities, after having opposed this initiative for several years, from 1957 became promoters of this initiative, and since 1980 the municipality provides the vegetable itself. On 27 August 2007, the office of tourism generally rewarded this festival as a festival of International Tourist Interest.
In the edition of 2011 there were 40,000 participants from all over the world and have been used 120 tons of tomatoes.
